چکیده

The study of coral diseases, coral pathogens, and the effects of diseases on tropical and subtropical coral reefs are all current, high-profile research areas. This interest has grown steadily since the first report of a coral disease in 1973. The author of this report was Arnfried Antonius and the publication was an abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting of the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean, or AMLC (then known as the Association of Island Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean). Since Antonius’ pioneering communication he continued working on coral diseases on reefs throughout the world, often documenting the first observation of a novel pathology in a novel location. Each of the coral diseases Antonius first described, in particular black band disease, is the subject of current and ongoing investigations addressing pathogens, etiology, and their effects on coral reefs. Many of the points and observations he made in his early papers are highly relevant to research today. This paper reviews aspects of Antonius’ early work, highlighting contributions he made that include the first in situ experimental studies aimed at discerning coral epizootiology and the first quantitative assessments of the role of environmental factors in coral disease. Antonius’ early findings are discussed in terms of relevant current controversies in this research area. Rev. Biol. Trop. 60 (Suppl. 1): 13-20. Epub 2012 March 01.

Marine spatial planning (MSP): a first step to ecosystem-based management (EBM) in the Wider Caribbean.

The rapid decline of coastal ecosystems of the Wider Caribbean is entering its fifth decade. Some of the best science documenting this decline and its causes has been done by the laboratories of the Association of Marine Laboratories of the Caribbean (AMLC). Alarmed at the trends, Caribbean conservation pioneers established marine protected areas (MPAs) which spread throughout the region. Unfor...

Progress in Understanding Coral Diseases in the Caribbean

Coral disease research in the Caribbean initiated in 1972 with the discovery of black band disease (BDD) by Dr. Arnfred Antonius. Since this time, there has been an expansion in the number of researchers working in the Caribbean, including studies to document the prevalence and incidence across large spatial scales and at increased temporal frequencies, evaluation of the linkages between diseas...

Incidence of Partial Mortality and Other Health Indicators in Hard-coral Communities of Four Southwestern Caribbean Atolls

Four southwestern Caribbean atolls (Albuquerque, Courtown, Roncador, and Serrana) were visited in 1994–95 to evaluate the status of coral reefs. A study of the health condition of hard corals (Cnidaria: Scleractinia and Milleporina) was performed at 62 stations, covering different reef environments from shore to 20 m depth. The surface of over 2100 colonies of 30 species was carefully examined ...

Current trends of space occupation by encrusting excavating sponges on Colombian coral reefs

Sponges are a significant component of coral reefs, their bottom cover and density often being similar to or higher than those of stony corals (Rützler 1978; Zea 1993). Among the various morpho-functional types of reef sponges, those that excavate the calcium carbonate reef framework play a key role in the balance between reef accretion and erosion (reviews in Wilkinson 1983; Glynn 1997). Addit...

Biodiversity and distribution patterns of coral reef ecosystems in ROPME Sea Area (Inner part: Persian Gulf -Iranian waters)

The Persian Gulf is northern part of the ROPME Sea Area (RSA), and is semi-enclosed shallow sea which located in subtropical climate. Measuring is 1000km in length, varying in width 60-340km, and average depth is about 35m and maximum depth is 105m. This research was carried out during 2005-2010 for reviewing the corals status and determination of coral reef habitats distribution in the Persian...
